What’s the difference between voice-over and subtitling?

Voice-over is generally one voice narrating a direct translation of the script and overlaying existing audio. Dubbing, on the other hand, replaces the audio, requires casting multiple voice actors and often involves matching the recorded audio with on-screen queues (i.e. lip-syncing). However, subtitles are on-screen translations of dialogues meant to accompany the audio-track, whereas closed captions are a full transcription of the media audio-track, including dialogue, sound effects, music, etc.

What are the benefits of voice-over over subtitling?

1- Reaches people who cannot read  2- No need to look at or be near the screen to follow up 3- Useful for those who have visual issues - wear glasses, are blind, or visual impaired 4- A voice is available when you left your glasses in your purse 5- A voice is available for blind and vision impaired people 6- A voice can have great impact by adding emotions

What are the benefits of subtitling over voice-over?

Subtitling has a lower production cost because no voice talent, audio studio, or recording engineer is required. Besides, voice-over implies losing the original voices. Impersonation of voice actors is never as good as the original ones, as well as lacking lips sync with the sound can disrupt the viewer’s attention.
